With the title of Diary of a One-Night Stand, you have a good idea what to expect, don't you?! But, by now, I know from reading four of her novels* that you never really know what to expect from this author. In fact, after I started reading and got involved with the story, I admit I did something that I never had done before--I turned to the last couple of pages to see what names were there...
Don't ask me why because I don't know...it was simply because I had developed a "preferred" ending and I didn't think that was a good thing to have when you're going to write a review, right? Soooo, I challenge you not to do what I did, but let the suspense flow freely as you read...
Although this novel is pure romance from beginning to end!
Of course, there are a million and one reasons for having an affair, right? So, Why? is not as important as... Kara was perhaps "open" to it???
But Kara's desire was just as demanding...
You know, when that happens to two single adults, most would say, well, go for it...
But Kara was married and had a daughter...
Yet she was feeling unappreciated, not so young, unattractive, and all of those insecure feelings that we women have from time to time. And when somebody makes that woman feel totally the opposite, sometimes being married is not enough to keep that woman from considering a one-night stand.
So, what makes this story different? Well, if you've read Weis before you already know that she's a wonderful storyteller and writer. Her imagination and creativity is delightfully poetic in her style, so that I just enjoy reading her! Her characters are realistic and whether you like them or not--or whether you think they should be doing what they're doing or not--is not as important as is the story that she tells.
Kara and Cal are not getting along as a couple. Now in my opinion it takes two to have trouble in a marriage, or else one is wearing blinders. How did I come to this conclusion? By being a single woman in a business world--that's all it takes to know, see, and realize that affairs are happening, whether you think they should or not.

You've got the rest of your life to think about your mistakes. So you'd better try and make some while you're still young enough to enjoy them." |
Weis gives all of us an opportunity to escape and recapture that twinkle in our lives--even if it is through reading about somebody else's lives. I'm not a constant romance novel fan, but there was sufficient complexity and surprises through the various characters that I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story. I think you will too, especially if you're a romance fan!
This was not my favorite of her books, but I'm positive it stacks well against other books of this genre! And do let me know what you think Kara should do!
Highly recommended for those looking for a "one-night stand," fantasize and enjoy, so you can think...twice...LOL
